720p X videos: the practical sweet spot
For a lot of X posts 720p is the best rendition available, and even when 1080p exists, 720p is often the smarter download: one fifth of the size, and on a phone screen hard to tell apart.

How 720p works on X
X has offered a 720p rendition for most videos for years, which makes it the most widely available HD size on the platform. If you're archiving older posts, 720p is often the ceiling.
“Why is X video quality so bad?” is a common search. The usual answer is bitrate rather than resolution: X's 720p at about 2.2 Mbit/s is fine for talking heads and screen recordings but shows blocks on fast motion, confetti or water. Downloading can't add detail that X's encoder removed.
Vertical videos are labeled by their width: a 720×1280 phone video is “720p”, not “1280p”.
720p by the numbers
| Use | 720p is… |
|---|---|
| Watching on a phone | Indistinguishable from 1080p for most clips |
| Sharing in chats | Small enough for most apps; see the WhatsApp page |
| Editing for YouTube | Usable, but take 1080p if it exists |
| Archiving | Often the best X ever had for older posts |
Limits and honest caveats
- Bitrates are the ones commonly listed in X's media data at the time of writing; sizes per minute are calculated from them. Your post can differ.
- Fast-moving scenes can look blocky at X's 720p bitrate; that's in the source file.
- If you need a sharper master, ask the creator for the original upload.
Pick by destination, not by habit
- Group chats and DMs: 720p is already more than most chat apps keep after their own compression; going higher only makes the upload slower.
- Slides and presentations: 720p fills a projector cleanly and keeps the deck file small.
- Cropping or zooming: avoid 720p if you plan to crop; a 50% crop leaves you at 640×360.
- Long-term archive of an older post: take 720p without hesitation when it's the top button, since there is nothing better anywhere.
- Older posts from the early years of video on the platform may top out lower still, at 480p or 360p; in that case the first button reflects the best surviving version and there is no hidden higher one.
Data budget at 720p
At roughly 16 MB per minute, a two-minute clip costs about 33 MB of mobile data and a ten-minute clip about 160 MB. That's a fifth of the 1080p equivalent, which is why 720p is the sensible default on a phone plan.
Questions people ask
Is 720p HD?
Yes, 1280×720 is HD; 1080p is Full HD.
Why does my 720p download look worse than on X?
It shouldn't: it's the same file. X's app may show 1080p on Wi-Fi while you downloaded 720p.
Which is better for Instagram reposts?
Take the highest available, and only with permission from the creator.
