Downloaded Twitter Video Won’t Play

A saved MP4 that won’t open almost always comes down to an interrupted download or the app opening it. Work through these in order.

How it works

No extension and no login. Copy a public X link, paste it above, then save the MP4 X already encoded.

  1. 1

    Copy the link on X

Open the tweet or live. Tap Share (or the three dots), then Copy link. Extra bits like ?s=20 are fine — we read the post id.

    Paste and extract

Drop the URL in the field on this page and press Extract. Public videos, GIFs, photos and lives are read the same way.

    Download the MP4

Choose 1080p, 720p or a lighter MP4. Or save just the soundtrack as MP3. Lives can be watched first; replay buttons appear when they end.

If Extract finds nothing, the post is private, deleted, or not public media. Open the same link logged out on X to check.

Fixes, quickest first

1. Make sure the download finished. Compare the file size with the size shown on the button (for example 22 MB). A much smaller file means the connection dropped — delete it and download again. Long live replays are assembled from many segments, so wait until the button stops saying Downloading…

2. Open it in a different player. Messaging apps and some gallery previews are picky. VLC (Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone) plays almost anything; on iPhone you can also open it from the Files app first.

3. Try another quality. If the 1080p file stalls on an older phone or computer, download 720p or 360p — the same video at a lower bitrate, easier to decode.

4. On iPhone, save it properly. Open the download from Files, tap Share, then Save Video to put it in Photos. Playing it straight from Safari’s download list sometimes shows a blank preview.

5. Re-download if it still fails. The files are standard H.264 MP4 that play everywhere; if one doesn’t, the copy is almost certainly damaged. If a link fails repeatedly, email contact@twitterdownloaderx.com with the link.

FAQ

What format is the file?

A standard MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio — the same codecs phones, TVs and editors already support.

Why is there a thumbnail but no playback?

The player can show a preview from a partial file. Check the file size against the download button and re-download if it’s smaller.

Can a Twitter GIF be a video file too?

Yes — tweet GIFs download as short looping MP4s, silent by design, so no sound is expected.
