Can't I just right-click the video and choose Save As?
No — X streams video through a player that doesn't expose a direct file URL to the browser's right-click menu, which is exactly why a separate tool is needed to resolve the real MP4.
Where does Windows/Mac save the file?
Wherever your browser's default download location is set — usually a Downloads folder in your user directory on both Windows and macOS, unless you've changed that setting.
Is a browser extension safer or faster than this?
