Why a “GIF” download is an MP4

The classic .gif format is large and low-quality for anything beyond a few colors — X abandoned it years ago in favor of short, silent, looping MP4s that just look like GIFs in the timeline. It's the same trick most platforms use now.

Practically, this means the file you download is smaller and sharper than a real .gif of the same clip would be, and it'll autoplay/loop the same way in anything that plays video.

FAQ

Is the file actually a .gif?
No — and neither is X's own "GIF". Every GIF posted on Twitter/X is stored and served as a small looping MP4 under the hood; that's what downloads. It autoplays and loops identically to the original, just as a video file.
I need a real animated .gif file — can this make one?
Not directly. Download the looping MP4 here, then run it through any video-to-GIF converter if you specifically need the .gif format (for an old forum, an email client, etc. that doesn't support video).
Does the GIF lose quality compared to the original post?
No — it's the exact file X's player already loops, not a re-encode.
