iPhone downloads: Files vs Photos, and how to move videos between them
Why videos downloaded in Safari land in the Files app instead of Photos, how to find them, move them to your camera roll, change the download location, and fix the common errors.

"I downloaded the video but it's not in my gallery." This is one of the most common iPhone problems with downloading anything in Safari. In most cases the download worked. It just went somewhere people don't expect.
This guide explains how iPhone storage is split between the Photos app and the Files app, where downloads go, and how to move videos between the two. It applies to any video you download in Safari, not just from our site. Menu names are from recent iOS versions at the time of writing. Apple occasionally moves settings, but the logic hasn't changed in years.
Two different places for two different jobs
Your iPhone keeps media in two separate systems:
- Photos is your camera roll and photo library. It's where the camera saves, where most social apps pick videos from, and what syncs with iCloud Photos.
- Files is a general file manager, like Finder on a Mac or File Explorer on Windows. It holds documents, ZIPs, PDFs and anything you download in Safari.
When you download a file in Safari, iOS treats it as a file, so it goes to Files, in a folder called Downloads. It doesn't automatically appear in Photos. That's by design: Safari can't know whether a downloaded file is a video you want in your gallery or a document you need for work.
Step 1: Find your download
- While the download is in progress, tap the download icon (an arrow in a circle) in Safari's address bar to see the downloads list. Tap a finished download to open it, or tap the magnifying glass next to it to reveal it in Files.
- Or open the Files app → Browse → iCloud Drive → Downloads (the default if you use iCloud Drive) or On My iPhone → Downloads.
- Use the Recents tab or the search bar in Files if you can't spot it. Search for "mp4".
Step 2: Move the video into Photos
- In Files, tap the video to open it.
- Tap the Share button (square with an upward arrow).
- Tap Save Video.
- Open Photos. The video is now in your library, dated by when you saved it (or by its embedded date, depending on the file).
You can also long-press the file in Files → Share → Save Video. To move several at once, tap the three dots at the top right in Files → Select, choose the videos, then Share → Save X Videos.
Once it's safely in Photos, you can delete the copy in Files to free space. Saving to Photos makes a copy rather than moving the file.
Step 3: Going the other way, Photos to Files
Sometimes you need the reverse: to rename a video, attach it as a file, or keep a copy outside iCloud Photos.
- In Photos, open the video.
- Tap Share → Save to Files.
- Choose a folder (On My iPhone, iCloud Drive or a connected drive) and tap Save.
Use this to back up important videos to an external drive. Files can see USB-C or Lightning drives plugged into your iPhone, under Browse → Locations.
Changing where Safari saves downloads
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps → Safari (on older iOS versions, Safari is directly in the main Settings list).
- Tap Downloads.
- Choose iCloud Drive, On My iPhone, or Other… to pick a specific folder.
Which to choose? If you have limited iCloud storage, pick On My iPhone, so large video files don't fill your cloud quota. If you want downloads available on your Mac or iPad too, iCloud Drive is convenient.
The same screen may offer Remove Download List Items (after one day, upon successful download, or manually). That only clears Safari's list; it doesn't delete the files.
Other browsers and apps
- Chrome for iOS also saves into Files, typically in a Chrome folder under On My iPhone. After it finishes, Chrome offers an Open in… option where you can choose Save Video.
- In-app browsers (the browser that opens when you tap a link inside X, Instagram or other apps) often don't support downloads well. If a download doesn't start, tap the menu and choose Open in Safari.
Troubleshooting
"Save Video" doesn't appear in the share sheet. The file may not be a format Photos accepts. Check the extension: our downloads are .mp4 (H.264), which Photos supports. A .webm, .mkv or .m3u8 file can't go into Photos directly. Also make sure the download actually finished: a partial file may still have a temporary name.
"The video could not be saved." Usually it's a lack of storage, or iCloud Photos is still syncing. Check Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Very large files can take a while to save.
The video won't play in Files. It may be incomplete. Delete it and download again on a stable connection. If it plays on a computer but not on the iPhone, it may use a codec iOS doesn't support. Converting to H.264 MP4 fixes it; see our compression guide.
Safari opens the video in a new tab instead of downloading. Long-press the download link and choose Download Linked File, or play it and use the share button in the player. On our site, the download buttons are set up to save the file directly.
The download disappears. Check the Safari downloads location setting. You may be looking in iCloud Drive while files are going to On My iPhone, or the other way round.
It saved to Photos but the date is wrong. Photos uses the date in the file or the save date. You can edit it in Photos: open the video → swipe up (or tap the ⓘ info button) → Adjust.
There's no sound. Check the ring/silent switch or Action button, and the volume. GIF-style posts from X have no audio at all.
Using AirDrop and a computer instead
If your goal is to get a video onto a Mac or PC, you don't need Photos at all:
- AirDrop to a Mac: in Files, long-press the video → Share → AirDrop, and pick your Mac. It lands in the Mac's Downloads folder.
- To a Windows PC: plug the iPhone in with a cable. Photos-library videos appear when you import with the Windows Photos app, but files in the Files app don't. For those, use iCloud Drive in a browser or the iCloud for Windows app, or save them to Photos first.
- To a USB drive: connect a compatible drive, then in Files use Move or drag the video into the drive under Locations.
Keeping your library tidy
Downloads pile up fast. A few habits help:
- Clear the Files Downloads folder regularly once videos are saved to Photos.
- Make an album in Photos for saved clips so they don't get lost among your own photos.
- Back up originals of your own videos to a computer or external drive. iCloud is a sync service, not a full backup; if you delete something on one device, it's deleted everywhere after 30 days in Recently Deleted.
Responsible use
Your camera roll syncs across devices and often into shared albums and backups. If you've saved a clip of someone else's work for personal reference, keep it personal. Don't add it to a shared album or re-post it without permission. For your own content, the Files app is a great place to keep an organised backup; see our guide to backing up your X videos.
