Error details
- Message on screen
- “This clip has no audio track.”
- Internal code
- no_audio
- Where it appears
- MP3 conversion in your browser (after you press Download MP3)
- HTTP status
- None: shown as a notification in the page
- Does retrying help?
- No. The file really has no sound.
How to fix it
- Check the badge. If the result card says GIF, the file has no sound by design.
- Play the preview unmuted. If you hear nothing with the volume up, the upload is silent.
- Look for the original. If the clip was a repost, the original post may have the sound.
What this message means
MP3 conversion runs on your device: the page downloads the smallest MP4 rendition, reads its tracks, decodes the AAC audio with your browser's WebCodecs and encodes MP3 at 128 kbps. If the file has a video track only, there is nothing to convert.
This is different from a video that plays silently because it is muted in the player. A muted video still has an audio track and converts fine.
Why it happens
- It's a GIF. X stores GIFs as short MP4s with no sound. The MP3 button still appears for them, and always ends with this message.
- The uploader removed the sound. Some videos are exported without audio, or with the track stripped by an editing app.
- Screen recordings without mic. Phone screen recordings often have no audio track unless the microphone was on.
How we know there is no sound
The MP3 button downloads the smallest MP4 version of the video into your browser and reads its track list. A video with sound has an audio track (AAC on X); a GIF and some silent uploads only have a video track. When the list contains no audio track, the conversion stops with this message before decoding anything. It is a property of the file X stores, so every quality of the same video gives the same answer.
This is different from a video that plays but sounds silent. If the player shows a volume control and the file has an audio track, the MP3 will be created, even if that track is just silence.
Videos posted with sound but muted in the timeline are not affected: X's autoplay mute is only a player setting, and the audio track is still in the file.
If you need a soundtrack for a GIF-style clip, it has to come from somewhere else; nothing on X can restore audio that was never uploaded.
Because the check reads the actual file, it also catches rare uploads where the uploader stripped the sound before posting, even though the post itself looks like a normal video with a speaker icon.
