Download X videos on Mac with Chrome

Chrome on Mac saves X videos to Downloads without any extension and without Safari's permission prompt. The quirks are macOS ones: the Downloads folder in the Dock, Finder previews and a few shortcuts that differ from Windows.

Download an X video with Chrome on Mac

  1. Copy the post link. Share › Copy link on x.com, or copy the address bar of the post.
  2. Paste and press Return. Paste into TwitterDownloaderX in Chrome; extraction starts on Return.
  3. Choose a quality. Click 1080p or 720p. The download bubble at the top right shows progress.
  4. Reveal in Finder. Click the bubble › the folder icon to show the file in Finder.
  5. Preview with Space. Select the MP4 in Finder and press Space for a Quick Look preview.

Where the file ends up on Mac

Chrome uses ~/Downloads unless you change Settings › Downloads › Location. Ask where to save each file before downloading opens a Save dialog instead.

Chrome's downloads page (also under Window › Downloads in the menu bar) keeps history per profile; Clear all removes the list, not the files.

Chrome on Mac: gotchas we ran into

  • No bottom bar. Like on Windows, recent Chrome shows a bubble in the toolbar rather than a bar at the bottom of the window.
  • Downloads folder access. If a security tool or a Full Disk Access change blocks Chrome from writing to Downloads, the download fails at once. Pick another folder to test.
  • Quick Look shows a black frame. Some first frames are black; play the preview to confirm the file is fine.
  • Duplicate names. Saving the same quality twice gives a (1) suffix. Delete the extra copy.

After the download

Final Cut Pro and iMovie import the MP4 directly. Because nothing was re-encoded, the 1080p file is the best source X has for that post.

For a lighter version to send by Messages, Finder's Quick Actions › Encode Selected Video Files can export at 720p or 480p.

From Chrome to Photos, iMovie or Final Cut

Chrome on Mac saves to the Downloads folder and opens the downloads page with ⌥⌘L. From there, drag the MP4 onto the Photos app to keep it in your library, or onto an iMovie or Final Cut Pro timeline: H.264 with AAC imports without any conversion.

macOS adds a quarantine attribute to anything a browser downloads. For a video it changes nothing: QuickTime opens it without the warning you see for apps.

To change the folder, open chrome://settings/downloads. Turning on “Ask where to save each file before downloading” is useful when you're collecting clips for a project and want them in one place from the start.

When a post has several videos, each one downloads separately and keeps its own quality label in the file name, so they sort together in Finder.

If you use several Chrome profiles, each one has its own download settings and history. A clip saved in a work profile still goes to the shared Downloads folder unless that profile was set to ask or to use another location, so check the profile you were in when a file seems to be missing.

Chrome on Apple silicon and Intel Macs behaves identically here; the page does all its work in the browser, so there is no separate build or helper to install for either chip.

Questions people ask

Does Chrome on Mac need a permission prompt like Safari?

No. Chrome downloads straight away unless you've blocked automatic downloads for the site.

What is the downloads shortcut in Chrome on Mac?

Option-Command-L opens the downloads page (also in the Window menu).

Can I convert the MP4 on Mac without extra apps?

Yes: Finder › Quick Actions › Encode Selected Video Files, or QuickTime › File › Export As.
