Download X videos with Microsoft Edge

Edge is already on every Windows PC, and it saves X videos without add-ons. It does add two things Chrome doesn't: a downloads flyout that pops open, and Microsoft Defender SmartScreen checks on downloads.

Download an X video with Microsoft Edge on Windows PC

  1. Copy the link from x.com. Click Share › Copy link on the post, or copy the address bar.
  2. Paste in Edge. Open TwitterDownloaderX, paste the link and press Enter.
  3. Click a quality button. Edge shows the downloads flyout near the address bar with a progress bar.
  4. Open the file. Click Open file in the flyout, or the folder icon to show it in File Explorer.
  5. Revisit downloads. Ctrl+J reopens the flyout at any time.

Where the file ends up on Windows PC

Edge saves to the Downloads folder in your user profile. Change it in Settings › Downloads › Location. The option Ask me what to do with each download makes Edge offer Open, Save as or Save each time, useful if you keep clips per project.

Edge syncs settings across devices when you are signed in, but not downloaded files; the MP4 stays on this PC.

Microsoft Edge on Windows PC: gotchas we ran into

  • SmartScreen scanning. Edge may show “Scanning for viruses” for a moment before a download completes. MP4 files are rarely flagged; wait for the scan to finish.
  • The flyout closes itself. If the flyout disappears, the download continues. Press Ctrl+J to bring it back.
  • Efficiency mode. Sleeping tabs don't stop an active download, but leaving the tab before the file starts can. Wait for the progress bar.
  • Work-managed PCs. On a company laptop, IT policies can block downloads or force a folder. If the download is blocked, it is a policy, not the site.

After the download

Edge's built-in video player can preview the MP4 by dragging it into a tab, handy for checking a clip before you send it.

To make a smaller copy for email, Clipchamp (built into Windows 11) can export at 480p or 720p.

Edge download settings worth knowing

Everything about where clips go lives on edge://settings/downloads. You can move the default folder, turn on “Ask me what to do with each download” to get Open / Save as choices for every file, and decide whether the downloads menu pops open when a transfer starts.

Microsoft Defender SmartScreen checks downloads for known threats. For an MP4 it is usually a second or two; if the item says it is scanning, let it finish rather than cancelling, or the partial file will be discarded.

Edge's sleeping tabs feature puts background tabs to rest after a while. A download already in progress keeps going, but if you start extracting a long broadcast and switch away immediately, come back to the tab so the page can hand the file to the browser.

Edge also syncs settings across devices when you sign in with a Microsoft account, but the download folder is local to each PC. If clips seem to go to an unexpected place on a second computer, check edge://settings/downloads on that machine; it may still point to an old folder or a drive letter that no longer exists.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to download X videos with Edge?

The file is a plain MP4 from X's servers, and Edge checks downloads with SmartScreen anyway.

How do I change where Edge saves videos?

Settings › Downloads › Location, or turn on Ask me what to do with each download.

Edge says the download failed. What now?

Try once more; if it fails again, see not working and the error pages.
