Error · private
“This account is protected. Private media cannot be extracted.”
Protected accounts (the padlock icon) show posts only to approved followers. Because TwitterDownloaderX never signs in to X, it sees exactly what a stranger sees: nothing.

Error details
- Message on screen
- “This account is protected. Private media cannot be extracted.”
- Internal code
- private
- Where it appears
- Extraction: X reports the post belongs to a protected account
- HTTP status
- 400 from /api/extract
- Does retrying help?
- No.
How to fix it
- Ask the owner. If you follow them, ask for the original file; it's better quality anyway. Our permission guide has message templates.
- Your own protected posts. Request your X data archive (Settings › Your account › Download an archive of your data); it includes your uploaded media.
- Don't use login-based tools. Any service asking for your X password or cookies can take over your account.
What this message means
When the public data source answers that the post is from a protected account, we stop and show this message rather than a vague error. It is a deliberate limit: we don't use cookies, logins or accounts to read posts.
Sites that claim to download private X videos ask you to paste page source or log in through them. That exposes your account and still only works for posts you can already see.
Why it happens
- The author protected their account. Their posts, including old ones, are hidden from non-followers.
- Account protected after posting. A link shared publicly yesterday stops working the moment the account goes private.
- Quoted post from a protected account. Quoting doesn't make the original public; the quoted media stays hidden.
Why following the account doesn't change anything here
Being an approved follower lets you see protected posts inside X while you are logged in. Our downloader never logs in as you; it requests the post the way an embedded tweet on a public website does. X answers that request the same way for everyone: the post is protected, so no media details are returned. That's why the message is the same whether or not you follow the account.
If the clip is yours, switch the account to public for a moment (Settings › Privacy and safety › Audience, media and tagging), download, and switch it back. If it belongs to someone else, ask them to send you the file directly; that's also the polite route for reusing it.
Be careful with sites or apps that promise to “unlock” protected videos. The only way to do that is to sign in with an account that follows the user, which means handing over your X password or session to a stranger.
Protection applies per account, not per post: if the account goes public later, its older posts become readable too, and the same link will start to work without any change on your side.
Locked accounts show a padlock next to the name on their profile page, which is the quickest way to confirm the cause before trying anything else.
Questions people ask
Is there any way to download a private X video?
Only through the owner, or your own data archive for your own posts. We won't bypass protection.
I follow the account. Why can't the site see it?
Your follow is tied to your login. The downloader is a logged-out visitor.
Does the error mean the link is wrong?
No, the link is fine; the post is private.
